Marin County Equine Evacuation & Rescue Program
“EQEVAC”

What Is This Program? Who Is Involved?
What Do We Do?

The Marin Humane Society is presently updating the equine component of its county-wide disaster plan, addressing the rescue of horses, mules, ponies and possibly other farm and ranch animals in the event of a Marin County emergency of any size. The Marin Horse Council is assisting in this effort.

The program will be completed in 2007. It will include:

Qualified volunteers with trucks and horse trailers.

Each transporter equipped with an emergency kit, proper equipment and an equine first aid kit.

Each volunteer will carry proper credentials to provide assistance to emergency animal responders in rescue and evacuation operations.

A cadre of veterinarians and farriers available on call 24/7.

A complete list of every horse facility, public and private, commercial and non-commercial, in Marin County including a count of the number of horses at each specific site.

An individual emergency evacuation plan and ‘barn manual’ for each site
Individual, identical identification cards will hopefully be placed on each stall, corral or pasture gate with all the important information about the horse, owner, vet, contact numbers, allergies, etc.

A list of staging areas for rescue teams to assemble.

A list of every possible alternative location, countywide, that could accept horses in an emergency.

Availability of heavy equipment when needed.

A maintained data base containing all information important to this plan, available to emergency personnel in emergency situations only.
